Despite the tie’s simple design, learning to draw a tie can be surprisingly difficult.
The good news is that while it can be harder than expected, it’s easier when you have a few steps to follow!
How to Draw A Tie
Step 1
For this tutorial on how to draw a tie, it will be much easier to use a ruler because there are many straight lines in this drawing.
You can draw two lines that start fairly close together and further apart as they go down. It should look like two slightly diagonal lines next to each other.
Then, once you’ve drawn those lines, draw shorter lines that meet at a point for the end of the tie. Once you’ve drawn this tie section, you’re ready for step 2!
Step 2
This next part of your tie design should be easy enough for you! In this step, you will draw the top knot of the tie, and all you have to do is draw three short lines.
The first of these lines run horizontally across the top of the tie. Then the other two will be even shorter, extending diagonally up from the top corners of the tie. That’s all there is to this step!
Step 3
Our tutorial on how to draw a tie is about more than just drawing the tie itself, and now let’s focus on one of the other elements – the shirt!
To draw the top of the shirt, you can draw diagonal rectangles that attach to the tie knot.
These rectangles get wider on the inside edges that touch the node and get a little thinner towards the top.
You can also always create your theme, and there are many great themes to use!
For this design, you can draw a diagonal line inside the tie. You can leave a small gap and then draw two more diagonal lines very close to each other.
Finally, you can draw a line from the top of each part of the collar to form the shoulders of the shirt.
Step 4
Our design for this tie looks striped, and we will start with this design in this step of our how-to-draw a tie guide.

The bottom part of the tie is cut off a bit, as you can see in the reference image.
That’s done for this step, but feel free to add some of your details to this image before proceeding!
That’s all you have to do now, so let’s move on!
Step 5
We’ll finish drawing the tie design you started in the previous step. For this step, you will need to repeat everything you did in the previous step 3 more times on the tie to complete the design.
The bottom part of the tie is cut off a bit, as you can see in the reference image.
That’s done for this step, but feel free to add some of your details to this image before proceeding!
Creating your design on the tie also gives you plenty of options to add stunning color to that design.
You can do it if you want a chic or extravagant business tie full of bright colors!
Once you know what colors you want to use, you can also decide what artistic media you want to use for this image.
We mentioned that you could create your tie pattern, but you can do more. One idea you could adopt is to draw the rest of the person wearing the tie.
This could include the head and arms of the person wearing the tie. You could use your face to make it look like you’re wearing this tie!
Step 6
This brings us to the final step of this guide on how to draw a tie. In this step, you can color your amazing drawing, and the good news is that you can use any color you want in this type of drawing.

If you want the picture to look more vibrant, you can use acrylic paint or colored pencils to bring out the colors. Mediums like watercolors and colored pencils would be great for a more muted look if that’s what you prefer.
